The necessary work for developing a scientific publication is sometimes underestimated and requires the effective participation of many players to obtain a result in good standard. Initially it depends upon the determination of the authors that decide to write the scientific article. Scientific writing is a very challenging and time consuming task, but at the same time essential for any scientist. A published scientific article is unquestionably one of the main indicators of scientific production, especially if published in a qualified scientific journal with highly qualified editorial committee and strict peer review procedure. By looking at evaluation criteria for scientific production of the several Thematic Scientific Committees of the Brazilian Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) it becomes clear publications in scientific journals that has certified quality is the most important item in the evaluation of a scientist production.

After the completion of one year of publication of Ambiente e Água - An Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Science, the following remarks can be made: three issues were published, totaling 18 articles that involved 68 authors; in addition to three editorials. The articles have come from 24 different institutions from Brazil and abroad. Some of those authors published more than one article. Most of the articles were in Portuguese (60%), others in English (34%) and in Spanish (6%). Both environmental and water resource themes appeared equally important as the main topic in nine articles each. Five articles covered both themes, simultaneously. The articles involved local studies (hydrogeology, aquifer recharge) as well as modeling large geographic areas (eight articles) that included the whole Brazilian territory (hydrology modeling), part of the Caribbean region (sea surface temperature and lobster catching), Amazonian Region with four articles (modeling water quality and deforestation), North-Central region of Brazil (conservation areas, burning and deforestation), and the Brazilian Southhern region (soybean yield and climatic modeling and forest modeling). Two articles focused on watersheds (physiographic parameters and modeling). One of the articles dealt with permanent preservation areas (PPA) mapping of a municipal district. Another article developed methodology for image analysis that can be used for environmental or water studies.

It is quite impressive the visibility of online publishing compared to offline. Lawrence (2001) computed the percentage increase across 1,494 venues containing at least five offline and five online articles. Results shown an average of 336% more citations to online articles compared to offline articles published in the same venue. If articles published in the same venue are of similar quality, then they concluded that online articles are more highly cited because of their easier access. Thomson Scientific, traditionally concerned with printed journals, announced on November 28, 2005, the launch of Web Citation Index™, the multidisciplinary citation index of scholarly content from institutional and subject-based repositories (http://scientific.thomson. com/press/2005/8298416/). The Web Citation Index from the abstracting and indexing (A&I) connects together pre-print articles, institutional repositories and open access (OA) journals (Chillingworth, 2005). Basically all research funds are government granted funds, tax payer’s supported and therefore, results should be made freely available to the community. Free online availability facilitates access to research findings, maximizes interaction among research groups, and optimizes efforts and research funds efficiency. Therefore, Ambi-Água is committed to provide free access to its articles. An important aspect of Ambi-Água is the publication and management system of this journal. It uses the Electronic System for Journal Publishing (SEER - http://www.ibict.br/secao.php?cat=SEER). This system was translated and customized by the Brazilian Institute for Science and Technology Information (IBICT) based on the software developed by the Public Knowledge Project (Open Journal Systems) of the British Columbia University (http://pkp.sfu.ca/ojs/). The big advantage of using this system is that it is compatible with the OAI-PMH protocol for metadata harvesting what greatly promotes published articles visibility. Currently, there are 687 conformably registered repositories in OAI. The Public Knowledge Project – Open Archives Harvester2. lists Ambi-Água: http://pkp.sfu.ca/harvester2/demo/index.php/browse/ index/677. At the OAI base the URL of Ambi-Água is http://www.agro.unitau.br/ seer/index.php/ambi-agua/oai?verb=Identify. Therefore, all Service Providers are automatically capable of harvesting metadata from Ambi-Água articles.

One important quality measure of a scientific journal is its scope, not just the scientific coverage, but also the geographical impact. In fact, the primary classification system, used to evaluate and grade scientific journals' quality in Brazil, known as Qualis CAPES, when classifying a journal attributes a quality grade A, B or C, and also adds an indication of the journal´s geographical impact: Local, National or International. This classification system is used by several other institutions, especially by research funding agencies, for instance, CNPq, whose thematic committees use Qualis CAPES classification to quantify the researchers' and Research Groups' productivity. This article discusses several possibilities for geographical impact evaluation and presents the mechanism used by Ambiente e Água – An Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Science (Ambi-Água) to monitor the extent of its spatial impact.

This April 2008, volume 3, number 1 issue of Ambiente e Água – An Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Science is a landmark for Ambi-Água to achieving national and international recognition. This year it is expected that the primary system for scientific journal evaluation in Brazil, QUALIS CAPES (http://qualis.capes.gov.br/webqualis/) will review the quality and geographical impact of Ambi-Água inasmuch as many Lattes curricula of scientists involved in Brazilian post-graduate programs show publications in Ambi-Água in the last two years. Batista (2007a) discussed details of CAPES evaluation procedure. In addition to the quality appraisal, CAPES also indicates the regional impact of scientific journals as local, national or international. Once a journal is evaluated by CAPES and has three years of on-time publications, CNPq, the major scientific support agency in Brazil, accepts applications for funding that journal. This may significantly improve the operational facilities of a granted journal. Ambi-Água editorial board is proud to announce that since its first issue it has been circulating on-time.

The publication of the seventh edition of “Revista Ambiente e Água – An Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Science (Ambi-Água)” demonstrates the international visibility that the journal is reaching. An unprecedented number of submissions has been received for this issue and resulted in an increased number (50%) of published articles, as compared to the first two volumes that had six articles published. This issue brings nine peer reviewed articles out of which 5 are published in English. Among those two were submitted from abroad (Nigeria and Argentina) in addition to several paper co-authors from the United States. The participation in the authorship of public universities and municipal, state and federal institutions was also significant. There were 18 authors in this issue from those institutions not considering those authors from abroad. There was also a thematic coverage expansion of articles within the interdisciplinary scope of Ambi-Água. An example of this is an article in Engineering concerned with thermal comfort in urban areas; several submissions in environmental chemistry with two published articles (organic and inorganic chemistry); one article in the area of public health and antimicrobial resistance in aquatic ecosystem; other in sensibility to oil spilling charting in coastal islands; chemical contamination in fish due to the improper land use in Amazonia; and two articles in hydrological modeling in watersheds. Powered by the OAI-PMH protocol (Batista, 2007), which greatly enhances the visibility of the journal, in addition to the fact that Ambi-Água appears in several international indexing systems and its free on-line availability with open access policy, the journal is being frequently consulted. In only two months (June 15 to August 15, 2008) there were 4,556 consultations with an average of approximately 500 consultations a week. These consultations came from 616 cities, 79 countries, and five continents in that period.

Ambiente e Água – An International Journal of Applied Science just published its eighth issue, completing the third number of its third volume with all issues published on time. The number of submissions increased significantly and, as a result, the number of published papers. Eleven articles were published in this issue. The geographic and institutional distribution of authors also increased not only throughout Brazil, but from abroad as well. First authors are affiliated with 28 different institutions in Brazil and from 5 different international institutions. The average number of weekly visitors increased from ~ 300 per week in 2007 to ~ 700 in the last months. The international interest in the journal is evident by the number of countries and related geographical coverage of journal readers. One significant improvement was the increased number of highly qualified peer reviewers that registered as article evaluators, as presented in this issue.

After completing three years since its first issue was published on August 2006, we are proud to report the development of Ambiente & Agua - An Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Science, ISSN:1980-993X, doi:10.4136/1980-993X that is publishing its 10th issue with 17 peer reviewed articles. Thanks to the great support of the scientific community, especially to the authorse and peer reviewers, all issues have been published on-time, i.e. at the end of April, August and December. Missions and goals are progressively being achieved. We have two new metadata harvester agencies listing the journal: the Portal of the Brazilian Agency from the Ministry of Education concerned with the graduate level education, known as CAPES in its service “Portal de Periódicos da CAPES” accessed by most of the scientific community in Brazil and the Summary of Brazilian Journals (Sumarios.org). We report in this current issue the growing international interest in the journal, by monitoring the access of readers, using several tools. Therefore, we anticipate a growing interest in the journal from not only the Brazilian but also from the global scientific community.

For quite some time the international scientific community has criticized the use of impact indicators based only on few journals registered at commercially subscribed databases such as the ISI Web of Knowledge (producer of Journal Citation Reports - JCR). Several studies focusing on different subject areas have demonstrated the advantages and disadvantages of assessing the impact of an article, or journal, from commercial and open-access databases, such as Google Scholar (Segen, 1997; Gisvold, 1999; DuBois and Reeb, 2000; Whitehouse, 2002; Baumgartner and Pieters, 2003; Cameron, 2005; Ha et al., 2006; Mingers and Harzing, 2007). Most of the studies found that there was a strong correlation between impact indicators measured by a commercial databases (restricted) and open-access in certain field areas (Science, Health, Biological and Applied Social), while areas usually with lesser coverage by commercial databases (Environment, Humanities, among others) end up having lower impact indicator values based on these commercial databases. Moreover, the number of publications in these last areas has shown a significant expansion recently and, therefore, they end up receiving greater impact scores when evaluated by open-access databases. In these cases the correlation between impact indicators calculated by restricted versus open-access database is significantly lower. In this exercise, developed to obtain impact values of various Brazilian scientific journals in international open-access databases, not only it could be demonstrated the role that the journal Ambiente & Água withholds in the national scientific community (and even international if considered the information published in previous editorials), but also witnesses the degree of efficiency, transparency, and simplicity of the indicators used. The Editorial Board of the journal Ambiente & Água stands in favor of using indicators that are transparent, simple, and free of charge in the process of assessing the impact of published articles and scientific Brazilian journals.

This editorial describes the process of periodic evaluation by CAPES, based on commercial indices proposed by companies such as the ISI FI by Thomson Reuters and SCImago by Scopus and public indices as proposed by SciELO and other freely calculated indices based on Google Scholar and investigates the impact position of the journal Ambiente & Agua compared with journals from the SciELO base. Results show that Ambiente & Agua is in the right path in the search for quality. Its editorial board strongly recommends that Brazilian public scientific agencies consider tools that are cost free and have large coverage for impact evaluation to allow the impact assessment of a range of emerging journals in a common and wide basis for all scientific journals.

The launching of this first issue of the sixth volume contains 12 inedited peer reviewed papers from 53 authors that originated from three continents, four different countries, 20 universities from which 16 are from several Brazilian federal universities, 3 from abroad, 1 Brazilian state and one municipal university. Other nine authors are from research institutions, among them three from abroad. We proudly state that this fifteenth edition has been published on time as it was the case of all previous issues. Most articles of this issue concentrate on environmental characterization of different ecosystems pollution control and mitigation. Two articles assessed the water quality of small river basins. Then there are two articles, one about fire occurrence and precipitation relationship and one about irrigation control to optimize water usage. This editorial points out new accomplishments and changes on publication policies.

In this editorial, the principles of a scientific publication, the editorial procedures and communication guidelines between authors and the Ambiente & Água journal’s Editorial Committee are discussed in order to improve the publication pipeline. Ambi-Agua is a completely open access journal, with no charges for submission, editing or publication and it is in a consolidation phase with just five years of circulation. Our staff is restricted to a few people that work part time in the journal sharing their task with several other chores imposed by their jobs at the University of Taubaté. Additional support to cover doi™ registration, Internet domain and hosting is granted by the Institute for Environmental Research in Hydrographic Basins (IPABHi). Therefore, it is important that communication is kept in a smooth and efficient way to maximize productivity.

In this editorial, we reflect on the evaluation criteria that is under discussion to be adopted for the assessment of CAPES (Brazilian Federal Agency for the Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education) Environmental Sciences area – CACiamb. This criteria aims to increase qualified production by simulating CAPES quality strata A1, A2, B1 and B2 production of Academic Master Degree Programs with 12 permanent professors based on the criteria established by the Interdisciplinary Area Committee – CAInter in 2007. As well as expectations for the adoption of periodic assessment of free access bases, along with fostering the use of scientific journals published online by Graduate Programs.

We are publishing the nineteenth edition since the first issue published in August, 2006. Since then, all issues were published on time as schedule in December 31, April 30 and August 31 of every year. Hopefully, this encourages potential authors to submit their manuscripts to our journal. This 19th edition contains 20 articles that were peer reviewed and selected for publication among 126 submitted in this period. The last three issues had also 20 articles published. These numbers meet one of the SciELO’s criteria to consider the indexation of a journal. We continue to practice the complete open access policy and fostering the visibility, securing data storage, and working to increase the scientific impact of the journal.

The year 2013 marks a turning point in the journal’s trajectory. This year, the “Open Access Year”, is a year to remember for our journal. At the beginning of the year, we were chosen to be included in the SCOPUS Collection. In July, we were admitted to the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). In August, the US National Agricultural Library (NAL) invited Revista Ambiente & Agua to be catalogued in the AGRICOLA database. We also were ranked in the B1 stratum of the Interdisciplinary Area by the “Qualis CAPES”, the most important journal index in Brazil. By year’s end, the Bid MCTI / CNPq / MEC / CAPES No 44/2013 had awarded us a grant aimed at encouraging the editing and publication of highly specialized Brazilian scientific journals in all areas of knowledge in order to significantly advance the country’s scientific and technological development and innovation. We also participated in two major publishing events: SciELO 15 Years and The XIV ENEC (Brazilian National Conference of Science Editors). As with recent editions, this issue includes 20 peer-reviewed articles. We continue our policies of complete open access and of working to increase the visibility of articles.

In this editorial, we discuss the necessary steps to guarantee the sustainability of Ambiente & Água journal as it grew in recognition by the scientific community. To publish world class scientific papers of professional quality, considerable amount of resources are necessary. Therefore, we will follow the trend of successful journals that have raised several funding sources to support the processing costs to publish in cutting edge technology that requires interoperability throughout a variety of platforms. We reviewed several procedures used by those journals and made the decision to adopt the “author pay” policy to help to sustain the operation of Ambiente & Água journal. In this 25th issue, we are publishing 15 peer-reviewed papers in a variety of environmental themes.

To contribute for the academic and scientific education in an integrated manner, the University of Taubaté (UNITAU) created 15 years ago it's Postgraduate Program in the Environmental Area (PPGCA). The present special edition of Ambi-Agua, celebrates this work period presenting 19 original articles originated from dissertations defended on the Master's Degree in Environmental Sciences, which involved diverse interdisciplinary themes. Timely in this editorial, we demonstrate the evolution of the work executed by the PPGCA to contribute with the establishment of environmental sciences in Brazil.

In this issue, we are pleased to announce that Revista Ambiente & Água has acted upon previous recommendations and taken all of the steps necessary to fully conform with SciELO Brazil collection requirements. Those steps included increasing the frequency of publication and broadening the editorial staff’s thematic and geographic coverage, to include augmenting the Editorial Board with professionals that have greater expertise in the life sciences and engineering of water, sanitation, environmental resources, and biological sciences. The journal was also advised, if possible, to seek professionals outside of the State of São Paulo and to increase Hispanic representation on the Editorial Board. The current issue includes 15 peer reviewed articles with “doi” registration, five in English, one in Spanish and nine in Portuguese. The articles each include an abstract in English and Portuguese, and collectively encompass a wide range of multidisciplinary subjects. We continue to promote the visibility of the articles in several search engines and academic and social networks.

After nine years of continuous on-time publication, we thought it appropriate in this editorial to review some of the journal’s accomplishments. To date, we have published 27 issues, on schedule, totaling 440 articles selected out of 1093 submissions. All of the articles have been peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers. Our average overall rejection rate is 60%, and this trend is steadily increasing due to the more stringent standards applied as the journal interfaces with various databases and indices, and also due to the increasing number of submissions we receive as the journal achieves greater prominence and recognition. The journal’s system currently includes 1,904 registered users, 682 of which are members of our ad hoc peer reviewers’ panel. Our Editorial Committee was recently augmented with the addition of outstanding scientists from the European Community, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America, and it continues to grow. In recent years we have been publishing about 60 articles per year. All of the articles have doi™ registration with CrossRef, which enhances their accessibility and visibility through interaction with many indices and publication search engines. We promote the visibility of the articles in many venues throughout the world and more recently in academic and social networks. Another major accomplishment was the recent inclusion of the journal in distinguished collections such as SciELO and SCOPUS.

The environment and the health of mankind are subject to strong pressures from pollutants. The ambition of a better quality of life is often frustrated by the increase in emissions as a result of the increasing consumption of resources and energy to satisfy the growth of the world’s population and its expectations for socioeconomic development. At times, problems take on a planetary dimension, the best known example being greenhouse gas emission, with the resulting effects of climate change. Pollution highlights our failure to provide adequate education, which is essential if we are to become fully aware of problems and actively seek sustainable solutions. To this end, it is essential to set up an extended environmental and health education program in all communities that will accompany younger generations from the beginning of their education in order to make them conscious players in protecting the environment and their own health. The size of the problems requires that a joint effort be made at an international level in the political realm and in the scientific-cultural realm in order to share experiences and sensitivity and to seek joint solutions. It is necessary to assign an increasingly important role to scientific and technological innovation which, in the last century, from Marconi to Einstein to Fleming, to the most recent innovations in the fields of genomics and microchips, has allowed humanity to achieve a rate of growth of wellbeing never previously seen in its thousands of years of history. This innovation must rationally be entrusted with our expectations to provide a practical solution to the problems of pollution that threaten our everyday lives and the survival of the planet. This text discusses the types of progress most eagerly awaited in the fields of water supply, wastewater treatment, atmospheric pollution and waste disposal.

In this editorial, we reflect on the benefits and legacy of the water crisis in Brazil between 2013 and 2014, which affected the water supply in many regions and especially in the southeast region, with emphasis on the conflict between the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro over the right to use the water of the Paraíba do Sul River Basin. We analyze the current state of water resource management, the integrated use of water and energy and possible solutions to expand the availability of fresh water.

This editorial discusses the Ambiente & Agua journal’s efforts to adjust to new criteria in order to remain in the SciELO Brazil collection. Special emphasis is given to efforts intended to meet the anticipated levels of internationalization, professionalization, and sustainable funding models in order to maintain the journal’s high quality and increasing impact. The Editorial Board identified the need to raise publication fees beginning on July 15, 2015. However, since we have a hybrid approach that includes public support and publication fees to cover article processing charges (APC), the new rates will be much lower than the average international APC.

This article discusses the benefits of an innovative approach to the problem of water security introduced by WHO in 2004, through the establishment of the Water Safety Plan (WSP). It was recently included in Commission Directive (EU) 2015/1787 – October 6, 2015 – the implementation of which is expected in the EU countries by 27 October 2017. The WSP is the most effective means of consistently ensuring the safety of a drinking water supply. The method is based on the use of a comprehensive risk assessment and risk management approach that involves all steps in water supply from catchment to consumer. The knowledge acquired by some experiences of WSP application, both inItalyand in countries with limited resources, is proving the effectiveness of the model as the best way to manage drinking water systems and protect public health.

During 18 years of experience in graduate education in the environmental area, the graduate programs in environmental sciences of the University of Taubaté have been consolidating the treatment of environmental issues in different geographic conditions, associated with the development of the metropolitan region of Vale do Paraíba, São Paulo, as well as environmental issues in the Amazon region. This edition of Ambi-Água presents 15 original articles from dissertations presented in the last three years, which reinforce the challenge in the treatment of environmental issues in an interdisciplinary context. The commitment of the PPGCA in the construction of knowledge in the environmental area that must guide the development of this important metropolitan region of the state of São Paulo is well known.

This paper presents general aspects of the water budget (including the latest available figures from its components), followed by some characteristics of the rainfall along the Paraiba do Sul watershed. The regional water budget theme is then discussed, taking into account the actual and future rainfall in the region. Finally, reflections and discussions regarding the water security theme (represented by the water transposition from the Paraiba do Sul watershed to the Cantareira´s system) are discussed, as the latter represents the water demand of São Paulo City. The future scenarios of the water availability are estimated using a climatic simulation model.

The novel coronavirus pandemic has resulted in global socioeconomic impacts; however, there is still a need to improve understanding and data about its form and patterns of propagation. Therefore, studies on the role of water resources and sanitation should be prioritized, given the potential to serve as a means of dispersing the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19 disease. So far, the RNA of the transmitting virus has been detected in domestic sewage in several countries, but there is, so far, no evidence of contamination by direct contact with these effluents. Even so, poor regions without adequate treatment of water and sewage, as occur in Brazil, must act in order to develop efficient policies to improve water quality aimed at public health. One of the options is the formation of a Hub that aggregates the various interrelated aspects of water and sanitation into a cohesive and actionable whole. It is essential to combine investment, research, and monitoring of water and effluent quality to improve sanitary security, water quality and human health, with an emphasis on the poorest sectors. The Hub would also serve as a means of controlling and monitoring the dispersion of pathogens such as the SARS-CoV-2 virus, thus mitigating economic and societal impacts.

The Ambiente & Água Journal has adopted strategies in recent years to increase its relevance within the international scientific community. The results of CiteScore, recently released for the triennium ending in 2020, indicate that the journal’s strategies are starting to show good results. Evidence of an increase in the proportion between the number of citations received versus the number of documents published is corroborated by the impact indicators from other sources, such as the Scimago Journal Rank (SJR) and Leiden University’s Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) Impact per Publication (IPP). Also positive is the fact that the journal's impact is increasing even with the increase in the number of papers published, contrary to the strategy adopted by some journals that limit the number of papers in order to increase the journal's impact.
